Beauty Blogger Sadiaslayy Made a DIY Pore Strip With Egg Whites and Toilet Paper

I love a good blackhead-extraction product. Mud masks. Pore strips. Peel-off treatments. You name it, I've got to have it. Like, now. My obsession (which may or may not have picked up steam within the last couple of years, thanks to Dr. Pimple Popper) is mostly due to the fact that my job literally requires me to test everything new and cool on the skin-care market, including the blackhead-removing product realm. Oh, and there's also the issue of living with a minefield of blackheads (ew, I know) atop my nose that has zero plans of evacuation. (Sigh.)

All of this is to say that when I come across a product, hack, or tutorial to rid my blackheads once and for all, I basically drop everything to assess. And my latest find, a DIY pore strip hack courtesy of beauty blogger Sadiaslayy, is certainly worth checking out. The YouTube star recently shared an Instagram video of her go-to, at-home hack, which involves toilet paper and egg whites (yes, seriously), and apparently has the power to rid her pores of dirt, oil, and gunk in just a few minutes.

In the clip, Sadiaslayy paints fresh, frothy egg whites onto her nose, and then takes a dry piece of toilet paper and applies it to the area that was covered in the egg whites. Once the paper is completely dry and has hardened, she applies a second layer of egg whites onto the toilet paper. From there, she lets the paper dry, and then slowly peels it off of her nose.

Slightly concerned with the idea of applying raw eggs to skin, I reached out to Joshua Zeichner, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, for the 411 on the breakfast-turned-blackhead-remover situation. Turns out, egg whites are actually an anti-inflammatory and "contain proteins that coat and calm the skin." In a pinch, the protein-rich food can be used to help soothe sunburns. Who knew?

As for its blackhead-removing capabilities, well, that's another story. "While applying [egg whites] on the nose may help hydrate the skin, I am not sure how effective it is in removing blackheads," says Zeichner. "Traditional pore strips are likely much more effective, as they are designed with specialized polymers that attach to oil within the pores when wet. The strip is able to pull out the blockage. The same effect is likely not achieved using egg whites and toilet paper." A-ha! I had a feeling.

Instead, Zeichner recommends skipping the strip altogether in favor of sudsing up with salicylic acid-based facial cleanser, which will help sop up excess dirt and oil while keeping pores clear to prevent future blockages. (We like the Best of Beauty-winning

). Granted, the wash won't garner the same satisfying sensation one experiences as they slowly rip a strip off their nose, but it's a lot safer (and gentler) for your skin.
