Woman arrested after 4
TEXARKANA, Texas -- A woman has been arrested on a charge of abandoning or endangering a child after her 4-year-old daughter was found walking down College Drive early Wednesday.
Sharedyjah Beard, 24, is being held in the Bi-State jail, with bail set at $100,000, according to the Texarkana Texas Police Department.
About 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, Officer Jonathan Price was flagged down by a woman who said that she had just found a child walking down College Drive. The girl was barefoot and wearing only pajamas, even though it was cold and wet outside, according to police.
The girl told police she woke up and could not find her mother, so she decided to find her. She was able to show them where she lived, and officers reportedly found the front door of the apartment open and nobody home.
After several minutes, Beard returned to the apartment and allegedly did not have a reasonable explanation for leaving her daughter home alone. Price noticed Beard appeared to be intoxicated and he could smell the odor of marijuana on her as they spoke, according to police.
Beard was arrested, and the girl's grandmother came to the apartment to take the child home with her.
Shawn Vaughn, spokesman for TTPD, said officers are thankful for the woman who found the girl and stopped to pick her up.
"We don't even want to think about what could have happened had she not. This story could have easily had a very tragic ending otherwise," Vaughn said.
