These items have been requested by the U.S. Jaycees:

* Non-perishable and canned foods; diapers; paper products; candles; building supplies such as nails, lumber and hand tools; bottled water; generators.

* Bulk goods. Companies that have bulk food staples or paper products are encouraged to donate.

Mail donations to Jaycees, 2005 Northwest 70th Ave., Miami, Fla. 33122. Do not send clothes.

The American Red Cross requests:

* Money. People can send checks or money orders, or have money taken from their charge cards for the general relief fund or specify a disaster area.

* Bulk goods. Companies with bulk supplies to donate should contact the local chapter. The chapter is referring individual donors and small groups, with clothing, goods and supplies, to other organizations; it is accepting only money from individuals.

* If a person or group claims to be collecting for the Red Cross, call the local chapter before you donate to verify what the person tells you.

Send money to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013 or to the Hampton Roads Red Cross, 4915 W. Mercury Blvd., Hampton 23605, the York-Poquoson Chapter of the American Red Cross, 6912 George Washington Highway, Yorktown, Va. 23692, Colonial Virginia Chapter of the American Red Cross, 324 Monticello Ave., Williamsburg, Va. 23185 or the Mathews Chapter of the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 186, Mathews, Va. 23109.

"Hurricane Andrew" should be noted on the check to designate the contribution for that purpose. Or use a charge card by calling 1-800-842-2200. Call the local chapter at 838-7320.

The local Salvation Army requests:

* Money. Send check or money order, with Andrew Relief written in the memo space, to Salvation Army, P.O. Box 7529, Hampton 23666.

* Clothing, non-perishable foods and other donations can be sent to Salvation Army, P.O. Box 270848, Tampa, Fla. 33688, or Salvation Army Andrew Relief, P.O. Box 4857, Jackson, Miss. 39296. Call the local Salvation Army at 838-1443.

The United Jewish Community of the Virginia Peninsula Inc. requests:

* Money. Make out checks to United Jewish Community, 2700 Spring Road, Newport News 23606. Call the community center at 930-1422.

The Rev. Jim Doyle of Orcutt Baptist Church has organized two work trips to Homestead, Fla. The first group leaves Monday afternoon. The second trip will leave Sept. 8. The trips will be several days long, depending on availability of resources. The church will be accepting donations of supplies at 653 Oyster Point Road, Newport News, Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The church will also accept donations on Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and before and after 9:45 a.m. and 6 p.m. worship. Church volunteers will also pick things up.

They need: canned goods, bottled drinks, water, juices, can openers, matches, candles, flashlights, batteries, bed linens, sheets, blankets, Coleman grills, gas cans and toys for children. Volunteers who want to go on the work trip or help in the collection efforts may call Doyle at 249-1280 and 249-1115.

Yorkminster Presbyterian Church in Grafton requests:

* Money. Contributions may be made out to the church with a designation for Andrew Relief.

* Food. Non-perishable, ready-to-eat foods. Please, not cookies and candies at this time.

* Other supplies. Donate light blankets, sleeping bags, disposable diapers and health-care items. Call the church at 898-5666.

Cub Scout Pack No. 154 at Langley Air Force Base, which gathered 1,700 pounds of canned goods for the Peninsula Foodbank earlier this year, has started a food and clothing drive for the hurricane victims, said Rebecca Whitehurst, a den leader.

The Scouts will distribute paper bags that will be collected from homes in the Bethel Manor housing area Sunday morning. The Scouts will pick up the bags, which can be left outside donors’ front doors before 10 a.m. The donations will be distributed to hurricane victims through Seventh-day Adventist churches. Call Whitehurst at 766-2734.

The Newport News Crime Watch Coalition and Amid the Ages requests:

* Bottled water, non-perishable food.

* Clothing, towels and linens.

* Furniture.

People can begin dropping off donations Monday at the old bingo hall at 9720 Warwick Blvd. in the Hilton Shopping Center in Newport News. The organizers plan to take a shipment of donations to Florida and another to Louisiana, said Carole Osserman of Amid the Ages. Call the business at 591-2606.

The United Methodist Church will be distributing money for hurricane relief efforts. Those wanting to donate should make checks payable to the United Methodist Committee on Relief or to any local United Methodist church, said Bob Casey, district superintendent for the denomination's Peninsula district.

Many of the area's Southern Baptist churches said they will be taking up collections for hurricane relief efforts on Sunday.

Bishop Walter F. Sullivan of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Richmond is asking diocesan parishes to take a second collection for hurricane relief efforts during Mass this weekend. Or mail donations, payable to the Catholic Diocese of Richmond and earmarked for hurricane relief, to the bishop at 811 Cathedral Place, Richmond, Va. 23220.

Operation Blessing, the humanitaria arm of the Christian Broadcasting Network, has along donated 30,000 gallons of water and $10,000 to the American Red Cross to help Hurricane Andrew victims, said Gene Kapp, CBN media director. The charitable organization is looking into utilizing local sources to supply emergency relief and will make an announcement soon, Kapp said.

David Hooker of Williamsburg has procured three trucks and will be sending more than 42,000 gallons of water and ice to hurricane victims. The trucks will be marked with red, white and blue banners and will be parked at the following three locations by early Monday afternoon: Salvation Army, 143 Merrimac Trail, Williamsburg; Williamsburg Shopping Center, Richmond Road; Williamsburg Crossing Shopping Center, intersection of Routes 5 and 199. Those wishing to make donations should take items to these locations between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Trucks will depart by Friday or Saturday of next week or as soon as they are filled. Requested items are: canned goods, toiletries, dry cereals, sleeping bags, air cushions, cleaning supplies such as brooms and mops, dry and canned food for pets and other basic items but try to refrain from sending large, bulky items. Jim Groleau of J.R. Groleau and Associates Inc. of Newport News is coordinating relief efforts for residents of the Bahamas. According to Groleau, the Bahamas were hit especially hard since they receive about 90 percent of their supplies from the Miami area. Some of the items needed are: water, milk, medical supplies, baby items such as baby food, clothing and disposable diapers, canned goods, building materials such as lumber, nails and plywood, clothing, toiletries, cups, plates and eating utensils, pots and pans, Coleman stoves and oil, flashlights and batteries, lamps and matches. * The Adventist Community Services, a voluntary disaster-response agency based at Andrews University in Berrian Springs, Mich., is operating a hot line for clothing and other personal items and volunteer assistance. That number is 1-800-253-3000.

* Catholic Charities USA, send checks to Disaster Response, Catholic Charities USA, 1731 King St., Suite 200, Alexandria, Va. 22314.

* Church World Service, send checks to Church World Service, P.O. Box 968, Elkhart, Ind., 46515.

* Episcopal Church Center can be sent to the Presiding Bishop's Fund for World Relief, the Episcopal Church Center, 815 Second Ave., New York, N.Y., 10017.

* Caritas International Inc., an international relief organization, can be sent to Caritas International Inc., P.O. Box 10-0179, Brooklyn, N.Y., 11210.

* To help the animals left without adequate food, shelter and care can be sent to Zoo Crisis Fund, American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums, 7970-D Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda, Md., 20814.
