I loved those nails and I honestly felt a bit lost (I know, a tad dramatic) after having them removed but I have to say, it was one of the best things I did for both my nails and my wallet.

Gel manicures made national headlines earlier this year after a study showed a potential connection between the UV light emitted from gel nail lamps and increased skin cancer risk — so I dove into that research as well.

For some more context, hard gel is typically used to add length to a short natural nail and is cured under an LED lamp or UV light.

"When cleaning, harsh chemicals and acidic cleaners will erode your gels and your natural nails," she added.
